Charlotte Hedemann GueniaAbout RICE

RICE is a Danish homewares and accessories company known for colourful melamine, handmade baskets, storage, and hand glazed tableware. The designs are made with a joyful spirit and with lots of details. The RICE dream is to make your everyday more colourful - when washing, cleaning, baking and relaxing in your home...

RICE is all about fun, funkiness and functionality, but we do work with our hearts as well. At RICE we make sure that we follow international standards regarding corporate social responsibility. Most of our products are made by workers in third world countries, and we make sure that all products are produced with high regards to human rights, healthy labor conditions and with no use of child labor. RICE meets the requirements of the SA8000 standard and uses Global Compact as a guideline for doing business responsibly.

At RICE we wish to surround you with homely items – down to earth but still funky, fun and functional.

Once upon a time… The story of RICE

RICE was founded in 1998 by Charlotte and Philippe Guéniau - the idea of RICE was under construction for a while... After living 15 years in Paris, Charlotte and Philippe wanted changes in their lives. Both of them had great jobs, but they felt the need to slow down, enjoy a quieter lifestyle but still be exploring new adventures. During a lunch in the French country side with Charlotte’s old friend from school – Charlotte and Philippe decided to try selling a few colourful items in Copenhagen. One of the very first items was a raffia bag made in Madagascar, and the sale surpassed all expectations. Charlotte and Philippe had to ration the bags because of the demand, and shortly after the couple extended their assortment with colourful melamine cups, pillows and candle holders. Today RICE distributes colourful items in about 45 countries, and in 2014 RICE opened the very first RICETERIA in Odense – a combined RICE shop and café. In fall 2015 RICETERIA Stuttgart saw the light of day…

The RICE designs are all inspired by the good old days and very down to earth with lots of details. We wish to colour you happy! Even though RICE is all about fun, funkiness and functionality, we do work with our hearts as well. We know that we can make a difference by acting responsibly, and since the very first days of RICE in 1998 social responsibility has been important for us. We have an ethical approach to doing business!

Why RICE?

Many people ask us about the name RICE. RICE – or rice – is a basic food item and in many countries it is vital for survival. In fact, many people in Madagascar receive a bag of rice as part of their salary. Our very first raffia product was made in Madagascar, and this is why the name appeals to us…
